Beating

Japanese: 叩解 - こうかい
Beating
A papermaking process in which pulp is mechanically treated to give it properties suitable for papermaking. Beating cuts the pulp fibers into short pieces, splits them lengthwise, or crushes them into gelatinous particles. The properties of the pulp after beating vary significantly depending on the method of beating, i.e., which of the above processes predominates, so a wide variety of papers can be produced from a limited number of types of pulp.
