… As the Age of Discovery began and Portugal expanded into Africa and Asia, a group of people known as the “Historians of the 500s,” including João de Barros, recorded the “achievements” of Portuguese people abroad. Although these records cannot be called literature in the strict sense of the word, the tragic dramas of the Portuguese during the Age of Discovery, especially those that occurred during voyages, were compiled by Bernardo Gomes de Brito in his “Departures of the Sea” (1735-36).
