Red Guards

Japanese:
Red Guards

A group of young people who, as the embodiment of "Mao Zedong Thought," played a key role in the early stages of the Cultural Revolution, and shocked Chinese society. On August 18, 1966, the Red Guards appeared at the million-person rally held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, holding the red scripture "Quotations from Mao Zedong" in their hands. They marched into the streets with the slogan "Break the Four Olds (old ideas, culture, customs, and habits)" and ran wild, yelling "Long live Chairman Mao!" They posted "Dazhi Bao" (wall newspapers) all over the country and sent Long March troops to Beijing from all over the country under the name of the Great Exchange of Experiences, but after repeated armed struggles, which spurred the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, they were suppressed by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council after their role as the catalyst for the Cultural Revolution ended. Many were sent to rural areas under the name of "downward migration," but after the downfall of the Gang of Four in 1976, most of them returned to the cities and played a major role in the subsequent democratization movement.
