1848‐1931 A German classical scholar, he studied at Porte, Bonn, and Berlin, and lectured in various fields of classical studies at the universities of Berlin (1874), Greifswald (1876), Göttingen (1883), and Berlin (1897). His academic contributions were extremely diverse, including the basic fields of paleography, papyrology, and epigraphy, as well as textual criticism and revision of almost all authors and poets of ancient Greek literature, research into prosody, philological research on historical documents, and research into Greek religion.
