A locker for personal belongings that can be used freely after inserting a coin into the locker slot and then locked. The first coin lockers used by Japanese National Railways (now JR) were installed at the Yaesu exit of Tokyo Station in July 1953. At the time, users borrowed a key from a locker room attendant, put their luggage inside, locked it, then returned the key to the attendant and received a receipt, and the usage fee was 50 yen per day. Later, with the advancement of locker equipment, the system changed around 1965 to where users insert a coin into the locker slot, lock it, keep the key themselves, and use the lockers freely at any time without having to worry about anything else.
