Law on the disposal of family stipends and prizes

...As intellectuals, they also had pride in their samurai status, and many of them became leaders in government, politics, the military, academia, business, and religion. However, dissatisfaction with the stipend abolition continued, so in 1897 the government promulgated the Family Stipend and Prize Abolition Law (Law No. 50), and by 1905 had processed over 122,000 petitions from over 292,000 people. The status registration system was abolished with the revision of the Family Registration Law in 1914, so the title samurai thereafter simply indicated that one was of samurai descent, but with the complete revision of the Family Registration Law in 1947 after Japan's defeat in the war, the title samurai was completely abolished in legal terms.
