In Grubenmann's abyssal zone, this is the deepest metamorphic zone. It is characterized by very high temperatures, hydrostatic pressures and low stresses. The index minerals are pyroxene, olivine, feldspar, mica, sillimanite, cordierite, spinel and garnet [Becke: 1903, Grubenmann & Niggli: 1924].
