Okubo Hikozaemon

Japanese: 大久保彦左衛門 - おおくぼひこざえもん
Okubo Hikozaemon
Born in 1560 in Odawara
[Died] Kan'ei 16 (1639). February 1. Edo A hatamoto in the early Edo period. Born as the eighth son of Tadakane, he was originally called Tadao, later Tadataka, and his pen name was Heisuke. In 1576 (Tensho 4), at the age of 16, he distinguished himself in his first battle and was ranked as a hatamoto. Since then, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu with distinction. He refused to become a daimyo, and is said to have responded to Ieyasu's inquiries as "the nation's leading advisor." Later, he served Hidetada and Iemitsu, and was an important hatamoto as a brave warrior who survived the Sengoku period. His book "Mikawa Monogatari" (3 volumes, 1622) is a typical example of the spirit of the so-called Mikawa samurai. He received a stipend of 2,000 koku in Mikawa Nukata County. The remains of his mansion are in Kanda Surugadai, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. (→Isshin Tasuke)
