Inson - Inson

Japanese:
Inson - Inson
Year of death: Kenkyu 9.10.29 (1198.11.29)
Year of birth: Security 1 (1120)
A Buddhist sculptor active in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. Son of In Kaku. His name first appears in records in 1149, when he created the half-height, six-foot-tall Dainichi Nyorai statue and the six-foot-tall Amida Nyorai statue for the West Hall of Seiraku-in Temple in Uji. In 1154, he became a hokyo for his work creating Buddha statues at Kongoshin-in Temple in Toba. He had already been promoted to the rank of hoin when he created the three-foot-seven-foot Buddha statue of Yakushi for a prayer for the birth of Kenreimon-in in 1178, and seems to have been a central figure in the In school of Buddhist sculptors, wielding great influence in the world of Buddhist statue creation at the time. In 1174, after the Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji temples sustained heavy damage from fires caused by Taira no Shigehira's war, he participated in the reconstruction of these temples together with sculptors of the En and Kei schools, and played an important role in creating the halo of the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple, but no confirmed surviving works by him are known. <References> Kobayashi Tsuyoshi, "Study of Japanese Sculptors," Shimizu Masumi, "Bushiin Sonron" (Seijo Junior College Bulletin, No. 19)
