Wu Wei

Japanese: 呉偉 - ごい
Wu Wei

A Chinese Ming Dynasty painter. Following Zai Wenjin, he played an important role in the development of the Zhejiang School style, and was a representative landscape and figure painter of the Zhejiang School or painting academy from the late 15th century to the early 16th century. His pen name was Jiwong or Shiying. His pen name was Lufu, and he was also known as Xiaoqian (Little Immortal). He was from Jiangxia (Wuchang, Hubei Province). Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by Qian Xin and established himself as a painter in Jinling (Nanjing). During the Chenghua era (1465-87), he entered Emperor Xianzong's painting academy and became a steward of the Renzhi Palace, but was expelled when Emperor Xianzong died. In 1499, he was summoned to Emperor Xiaozong's painting academy and was given the seal of "Original Painter" by Emperor Xiaozong, but returned to Nanjing two years later. He was said to have been a generous person, a big drinker, and led a free-spirited life. His style of painting was also generous, with rough brushstrokes and skillful use of strong ink techniques, influencing the next generation.
