A small village in the Loth department in south-central France. A scenic spot and pilgrimage site with medieval houses, castle gates, and churches built one on top of the other on the slope of the Arzew River gorge. It is said to have originated as a place where Saint Amadour retired to worship Saint Mary, and in the Middle Ages it became a pilgrimage site for worshipping the Black Madonna, as a passage to the holy site of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It has a 14th century castle, a Gothic chapel, and a Romanesque church. Population 614 (1999).
