Kuwana Domain

Japanese:
Kuwana Domain

During the Edo period, this clan ruled the area around Kuwana in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). In 1600 (Keicho 5), Ujiie Yukihiro (25,000 koku), lord of Kuwana Castle, sided with the Western Army in the Battle of Sekigahara, and was stripped of his fief. The following year, Honda Tadakatsu (120,000 koku), a veteran vassal of Mikawa, was given his fief, and the clan was established. He started the layout of the town, creating the foundations of present-day Kuwana City, and passed this on to his eldest son, Tadamasa. Tadamasa's son, Tadatoki, became the husband of Ieyasu's granddaughter Senhime, and was granted an additional 10,000 koku, but in 1617 (Genwa 3), he was transferred to Himeji in Harima. In his place, Ieyasu's half-brother Matsudaira (Hisamatsu) Sadakatsu (110,000 koku) was appointed to the domain, and his second son Sadayuki took over. In 1634 (Kan'ei 11), Sadayuki was transferred to Matsuyama, Iyo. In his place, Sadakatsu's third son Matsudaira Sadatsuna (110,000 koku, Chinkoku no ko) took over from Ogaki, Mino, and passed the title on to Sadashige and Sadashige. Sadashige ruled for a long period from 1657 (Meireki 3) until 1710 (Hoei 7), when he was accused of mismanagement due to an incident involving the district magistrate Nomura Masuemon, and was transferred to Takada, Echigo. Next, Matsudaira (Okudaira) Tadamasa (100,000 koku) was appointed to the domain, followed by Tadataka, Tadatakahira, Tadataka, Tadatakatomo, Tadatakasuke, and Tadataka. During this time, the Horeki flood control of the Kiso, Ibi, and Nagara rivers and the two major uprisings of the Tenmei and Bunsei eras occurred. In 1823 (Bunsei 6), Tadataka was transferred to Musashi-Oshi. During the reign of Sadanaga (110,000 koku, son of Matsudaira Sadanobu) of the Hisamatsu Matsudaira clan, who had moved to Shirakawa in Mutsu, he was appointed to Kuwana again. The domain school Rikkyokan was opened. Sadakata was the younger brother of Matsudaira Katamori, the lord of Aizu, and served as Kyoto Shoshidai in 1864 (Genji 1), and fought in the Shogunate army at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868 (Keio 4). After several battles, he crossed over to Hakodate. During this time, the pro-surrender faction took control of the domain, and with the support of Sadanori, the son of the previous lord Sadakata, they surrendered to the new government army. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the domain was abolished, and the area became Kuwana Prefecture, Anotsu Prefecture, and then was incorporated into Mie Prefecture.
