Japanese: ウミホオズキ(海酸漿) - ウミホオズキ

This refers to the pouch (egg sac) that marine snails place and protect their eggs in. The pouch is leathery, resistant to acids and alkalis, and transparent or white to pale yellow; it appears yellow because the color of the eggs inside can be seen through the pouch. Large numbers of these are lined up and laid. Those sold at night stalls, festivals, and beaches may be dyed red or yellow. Shapes vary depending on the species, which is why they have various names. The naginata nightshade is white, long and thin, with a pointed tip and a slightly curved shape. It is the egg sac of the red sea snail, laid from May to August and attached to muddy bottoms, rocks, or shells.

海産の巻貝類が卵を入れて保護する袋(卵囊)をいう。袋は革質で酸やアルカリに強く，透明または白色～淡黄色で，黄色に見えるのは中の卵の色が透けて見えるためである。これを多数並べたて産みつける。夜店や縁日，海水浴場で売られているのは赤色や黄色に染められていることがある。形は種類によって異なり，そのため名もいろいろついている。　ナギナタホオズキは白色で細長くて先端がとがり，やや反っている。アカニシの卵囊で5～8月に産み，泥底，岩れきや貝殻に付着させる。
