Genbikei Gorge

Japanese:
Genbikei Gorge

The Iwai River Valley is located in the southwest of Iwate Prefecture, west of Ichinoseki City. The Iwai River, which originates from Mt. Kurikoma on the border of Iwate, Akita and Miyagi prefectures, has eroded the valley floor of quartz trachyte, creating a two-kilometer valley landscape with potholes, deep pools, oddly shaped rocks and 48 waterfalls caused by the erosion of the rapids. The beauty of the rocks and water is exceptional, and it was selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan during the Taisho period, and designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument in the early Showa period. Near Tengubashi Bridge in the center, there are observation decks, gazebos, inns and shops, and it is the base of a tourist route around Mt. Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, Takkoku-no-Iwaya and Hiraizumi. There is a bus service from Ichinoseki Station on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen.
