A general term for machines that use the energy of compressed air to operate. There are many examples, such as pneumatic drills, pneumatic riveters, pneumatic hammers, pneumatic jackhammers, and door engines that open and close train doors. In all cases, air is compressed in a compressor, stored in a tank, and then guided through a pipe to operate these machines. Other examples that can be called pneumatic machines include windmills that use the natural flow of wind, compressors that compress air, vacuum pumps that create pressures lower than atmospheric pressure, fans that send air to blast furnaces, bellows, and air compression turbines used in jet engines and gas turbines. Air conditioners that regulate the indoor temperature of buildings, air chutes used to transport documents, and pneumatic conveyors used to transport powder are also types of pneumatic machines.
