Senno (Sen'o) - Senno

Japanese: センノウ(仙翁) - センノウ
Senno (Sen'o) - Senno
It is a perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family that was introduced from China and is planted in gardens, but is rarely cultivated now. It grows to a height of about 60 cm, has dense fine hairs all over, high nodes, and broad lanceolate leaves arranged in pairs. In summer, it produces cymes at the ends of the branches and produces crimson flowers about 4 cm in diameter. It has five petals with several irregular notches at the tip. Another species of the same genus, Suisenno (Suisenno), is native to southern Europe and is also called flannel because it is covered with white fluff all over. It produces purple-red flowers with long stalks from summer to autumn. It is cultivated in gardens and for cut flowers. Fusigurosenno is a Japanese specialty that grows wild in semi-shaded areas in the mountains. It grows to a height of 80 cm, has high nodes, and is tinged with purple-black. It produces crimson flowers about 5 cm in diameter with slightly depressed petal tips from July to September. Matsumoto Sennou, cultivated for ornamental purposes, has no flower stalk, the petals are shallowly bifurcated at the tip, and have fine notches on the edges. The flower color is deep red, but there are also striped and white-flowered varieties.
