A small bamboo of the grass family. It commonly grows in the mountains and fields of western Japan. It spreads by spreading its underground stems horizontally. The stem (culm) is upright, green and smooth, and when it ages it can reach 3m in length and a diameter of about 1cm. It has 2-10 leaves at the end of the branches, lanceolate with a pointed tip, 4-20cm long and 1.5-3.5cm wide. The edges of the leaf sheaths are hairy. In eastern Japan, there is a closely related species, Azumanezasa (Higashinezasa).
