A perennial plant of the lily family. It grows widely in mountains, fields and forests. The bulbs are oblong, about 5 cm long, and deep underground. In early spring, they produce flower stalks about 20 cm tall, with a single beautiful crimson-purple flower at the end, slanting downward. Two oblong leaves with purple spots grow in the middle of the stem. The starch contained in the bulbs is refined for food and medicinal purposes. It was once prized as a high-quality starch, and the name katakuriko (potato starch) remains to this day.
