Omote-zukuri

...Kadoya was a high-ranking residence that only courtesans of the Tenjin rank or above could attend, such as tayu, tenjin, hashi, and kakoi, and its architectural design was full of various ideas that reflected the lavishness of wealthy townspeople. It basically belongs to the so-called "Omote-zukuri" style, consisting of a front ridgepole facing the street, a front yard, an entrance hall, an inner ridgepole, and a parlor ridge to the northwest of the ridgepole, but it has many differences from ordinary Kyoto townhouses, such as having many parlors of various sizes. The exterior is extremely simple, reflecting the restrictions on house construction from the mid-Edo period onwards, but there are many rooms on the first floor of the main building, including the 28-tatami Ajiro Room with a wire mesh ceiling, the 23-tatami Donsu Room with donsu sliding doors, the 12-tatami Misuguchi Room, the 10-tatami Suiren Room with green curtains painted on the sliding doors, the 21-tatami Ogi Room with fan patterns scattered on the ceiling, and the Shiki no Kusa Room with four seasons grass. The six-tatami-mat room "Kusahana-no-Ma" is named after its sliding doors painted with flowers, and on the second floor of the inner wing there is the 17-tatami-mat room "Aogai-no-Ma" with a terrace and Chinese-style aogai inlay on the walls, tokonoma alcove, shelves and fittings, as well as the 14-tatami-mat room "Higaki-no-Ma" with its higaki (cypress fence) design on the ceiling and lower parts of the shoji screens, as well as the "Enoki-no-Ma", "Ume-no-Ma", "Hakkei-no-Ma" and "Kujaku-no-Ma".

…角屋は大夫，天神，端（はし），鹿恋（かこい）といった遊女のうち，天神以上の遊女しか呼ばない格の高い揚屋で，建築意匠には，財力をもった町人の贅を尽くしたさまざまな趣向が凝らされている。基本的には通りに面した表棟と前庭，玄関，および奥棟とその北西の座敷棟とからなるいわゆる〈表造り〉に属するが，大小とりまぜ多くの座敷をもっていることなど，一般の京の町屋と異なる点が少なくない。外観は江戸中期以降の家作制限を反映してきわめて質素だが，表棟1階には天井に網代（あじろ）を組んだ28畳敷きの〈網代の間〉，2階には襖に緞子（どんす）を張った23畳敷きの〈緞子の間〉，12畳敷きの〈翠簾口（みすぐち）の間〉，襖に翠簾を描く10畳敷きの〈翠簾の間〉，天井に扇面を散らした21畳敷きの〈扇の間〉，四季の草花の描かれた襖にちなむ6畳敷きの〈草花の間〉などがあり，奥棟の2階には，露台をもち壁，床の間，棚，建具の桟にいたるまで青貝をはめ込んで中国風の趣をたたえた17畳敷きの〈青貝の間〉，天井や障子の腰などに檜垣（ひがき）の意匠を用いた14畳敷きの〈檜垣の間〉，さらに〈囲の間〉〈梅の間〉〈八景の間〉〈孔雀の間〉などがある。…
