Accipitridae. A small vulture with a total length of 47-65cm. There are three subspecies of different sizes. Its face is bare of yellow skin, and its beak is long and thin and black. Its flight feathers are black, and the rest of its body is white, but it is often rusty or brownish with dirt. The feathers on the back of its head and neck are long and bristly. It breeds from southern Europe to Central Asia, India, the Himalayas, central and northern Africa, and Namibia. It is a summer bird (→ migratory bird) in northern Africa, Europe, and Central Asia, and migrates to the southern breeding grounds in winter. It builds its nests on cliffs, on the overhangs of buildings, or in large trees. Like many other vultures, it gathers around carrion, but because it is small, it waits around for the larger species to leave and then eats the remaining bits. It also eats insects, animal feces, reptiles, and small animals. They have also been known to throw fist-sized stones at ostrich eggs, cracking the shells and eating the contents. タカ目タカ科。全長 47～65cmの小型のハゲワシ。大きさの異なる 3亜種がある。顔は黄色の皮膚が裸出し，嘴が細長くて黒い。羽色は風切羽が黒く，体のほかの部分は白いが，土がついて錆色や褐色がかっていることが多い。後頭から頸の羽毛は長く，みの毛のようになっている。ヨーロッパ南部から中央アジア，インド，ヒマラヤ地方，アフリカ中・北部，ナミビアで繁殖する。アフリカ北部やヨーロッパから中央アジアでは夏鳥（→渡り鳥）で，冬季は繁殖地の南部へ渡る。巣は崖や建物の張り出しの上，大木などにつくる。ほかの多くのハゲワシ類と同様，動物の死肉に集まるが，体が小さいので大型種が去るのを周辺で待ち，残った小片などを食べる。ほかにも昆虫や動物の糞，爬虫類，小型の動物なども食べる。また，こぶし大の石をくわえてダチョウの卵に投げつけ，卵殻を割って内容物を食べるという行動を見せる。（→ワシ，猛禽類）
