After the Miocene epoch of the Tertiary period, a lowland was formed running east to west across the central part of southwestern Japan, and the sea invaded this lowland. This lowland is called the Old Seto Inland Sea, or the Seto Inland Sea area. The sea has existed twice: at the beginning of the middle Miocene (15 to 16 million years ago), and from the middle Pliocene (3 million years ago) until the present. The former period is called the First Seto Inland Sea Period, and the latter the Second Seto Inland Sea Period. The sea of the First Seto Inland Sea Period extended from southern Nagano Prefecture, through the Nobi Plain and Nara Basin, to northern Okayama and Hiroshima Prefectures, connecting with the Pacific Ocean near Ise Bay and the Kii Channel, and with the Sea of Japan near its western end.
