…In Homer, he is the brother of Hypnos (sleep), and in Hesiod, he is the son of Nyx (night), but in both cases he remains an abstract being. His personal deity can be found in Euripides' tragedy Alcestis, in which the hero Hercules fights with Thanatos and saves Alcestis, and in a story by Phrynicus, a writer from the 5th century BCE, in which Zeus, enraged after being exposed by Sisyphus as the kidnapper of the daughter of the river god Asopus, sends Thanatos to Sisyphus, but the cunning Sisyphus tricks and ties up Thanatos, so that there are no more deaths for some time until the war god Ares releases him.
