The concentration of a substance dissolved in blood. It is measured after a blood sample is taken and displayed as the weight (mg/ml, etc.) contained in 1 ml of blood or as a percentage. Blood concentrations of normal components of the body such as proteins, sugars, and hormones are used as clinical test data for diagnosing diseases. Blood drug concentrations are used to evaluate the effectiveness of drugs and the risk of side effects. They are also used to measure blood alcohol concentration to gauge the degree of intoxication, and to determine intoxication from narcotics and stimulants.
