Born December 25, 1867 in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland)
[Died] October 12, 1948. Hamburg. German critic. His real name was Alfred Kempner. He studied at the University of Berlin. He was in charge of theater criticism for a Berlin newspaper, and was a vocal supporter of Expressionism, sharply criticizing naturalistic theater. With the rise of the Nazis, he fled to Paris and then to London. He was mainly active in the field of theater theory. His main work was Die Welt im Drama (The World in the Drama) (5 volumes, 1917).
