Callippos - Callippos

Plato, who considered the heavens to be divine, believed that the only motion appropriate for the heavens was uniform circular motion, and raised the question of how to explain the apparent irregularities of planetary motion, such as prograde, retrograde, and stationary motion, without deviating from the principle of uniform circular motion. The geometric theory of concentric spheres devised by Eudoxus and Callippus was an excellent answer to this problem. Later, Aristotle, based on the theory of concentric spheres, completed his cosmology as a hierarchically ordered cosmos.
