Inspection - Kemi

Japanese:
Inspection - Kemi
It is also written as kemi, and kenmi can also be read as kenmi. It is the act of inspecting and cutting the standing hair (crops) of fields and deciding taxes according to the yield. It has been seen in historical documents since the end of the Kamakura period, and was also practiced during the Sengoku period, but the method varied depending on the feudal lord. The method in the Edo period was almost established during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644), and the shogunate used the ridge-drawing inspection method until around the Kyoho period (1716-1736), after which it changed to the arige inspection method with the transition to the fixed exemption system. The former was based on the status (grade) and stone pile (yield per tan) of the rice field determined by land surveys in the early modern period, while the latter determined the tax based on the actual yield. Other inspection methods included the Irodori inspection, which was a type of Arimo inspection, and the simplified Tomi inspection, Token inspection, Junai inspection, and Ukemen'i inspection. Cotton inspections were also carried out in the Kinai and Chugoku regions, where cotton was grown in both fields and rice paddies.
