A port city that is the legislative capital of the Republic of South Africa and the capital of the Western Cape Province. In Afrikaans it is called Kaapstad. Population: 855,000 (1991), metropolitan population: 2.35 million (1991). Most of the population are Cape Coloureds of Asian descent. It is located at the base of the Cape of Good Hope, which forms the border between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, at the foot of Table Mountain (1,086 m above sea level) and facing Table Bay. It has a temperate climate similar to that of the Mediterranean. Since Bartolomeu Dias, the first European to arrive there in 1488, Table Bay has been an important port of call for ships sailing to India, Southeast Asia, and East Asia.

南アフリカ共和国の立法上の首都であり，西ケープ州の州都でもある港湾都市。アフリカーンス語ではカープスタットKaapstadという。人口85万5000(1991)，大都市域人口235万(1991)。アジア系のケープ･カラードが多い。大西洋とインド洋の境界をなす喜望峰の基部に位置し，テーブル山(標高1086m)のふもとにあってテーブル湾に面している。地中海の気候に似た温帯の気候風土をもつ。1488年バルトロメウ･ディアスが最初のヨーロッパ人として来航して以来，テーブル湾はインドや東南アジア，東アジアに航行する船舶の重要な寄港地となった。
