French composer. His real name was Charles Émile Lévy. He was born in Strasbourg. He studied under Marmontel at the Paris Conservatory. In 1865, he was appointed court pianist and court ballet director to Empress Eugénie of Napoleon III, and conducted balls at the Paris Opera. He also achieved success in Berlin, Vienna, and London, composing more than 250 pieces of dance music, including waltzes such as Les patineurs (1882) and Estudiantina (Spanish) (1883).
