Emil Waldteufel

French composer. His real name was Charles Émile Lévy. He was born in Strasbourg. He studied under Marmontel at the Paris Conservatory. In 1865, he was appointed court pianist and court ballet director to Empress Eugénie of Napoleon III, and conducted balls at the Paris Opera. He also achieved success in Berlin, Vienna, and London, composing more than 250 pieces of dance music, including waltzes such as Les patineurs (1882) and Estudiantina (Spanish) (1883). He died in Paris.

フランスの作曲家。本名Charles Émile Lévy。ストラスブール生まれ。パリ音楽院でマルモンテルに師事。1865年ナポレオン3世のウージェニー皇妃の宮廷ピアニスト兼宮廷バレエ監督に就任、パリのオペラ座の舞踏会で指揮を務めたほか、ベルリン、ウィーン、ロンドンでも成功を収め、『スケートをする人々』Les patineurs（1882）、『女学生』Estudiantina（スペイン語）（1883）などのワルツに代表される250曲以上の舞踏音楽を作曲した。パリで没。
