The highest peak in the Karakoram range. It is located on the China-Pakistan border in the Baltoro range in the central-eastern Karakoram. With an elevation of 8,611m, it is the second highest peak in the world after Mount Everest. Its name comes from the survey symbol K 2 , which stood for Karakoram No. 2, recorded in the Angle Book when it was surveyed by Colonel T. G. Montgomery and others of the Survey of India in 1856, but in China it is called Chogori (meaning "big mountain" in Baluchi). The first person to approach K 2 was H. H. Godwin Austin, who entered the Baltoro Glacier in 1861, and it is sometimes called Mount Godwin-Austen after him. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
