A general term for unsaturated cyclic compounds that do not have a benzene nucleus and have aromatic properties. They are also called non-benzenoid aromatic compounds. In addition to neutral molecules such as azulene and tropolone, they also include ionic species such as cyclopentadienyl anions and cycloheptatrienyl cations.
