A bay in the bend of the Shimokita Peninsula in the northeastern part of Aomori Prefecture. It is a branch of Mutsu Bay. The sand spit of Ashizaki juts out from the southwest and cuts into part of the bay. Ominato Port flourished as a timber shipping port during the Edo period, and after a naval port office was established there in 1905 (Meiji 38), it developed into a military port, and is currently a base for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. In 1967 (Showa 42), it became the home port of Japan's first nuclear ship, the Mutsu, but due to a radiation leak accident in 1974, it was forced to give up this role. Nori seaweed is cultivated in part of the bay, and swans also migrate there in winter. [Hiroshi Yokoyama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
