Jingnan (English spelling)

Japanese: 荆南 - けいなん（英語表記）Jīng nán

One of the ten states of the Five Dynasties in China. 907-963. Also called Nanping or Northern Chu. It controlled only three prefectures in the north of Hubei and had its capital in Jiangling (Jingzhou). Its first ruler, Gao Jixing (858-928), who was a vassal of Zhu Quanzhong, was appointed as the Jingnan governor in 907 (Kaiping 1), when the Later Liang Dynasty was founded, and was made King of Nanping by Zhuangzong of the Later Tang Dynasty in 924 (Tongguang 2). During the next 57 years under five rulers, it prospered as a major center of inland commerce, paying tribute not only to the Central Plains Dynasty, but also to the surrounding countries such as Wu, Southern Han, Min, and Later Shu, and utilizing its role as a buffer zone.

中国，五代の十国の一つ。907‐963年。南平または北楚ともいう。湖北のわずか3州のみを領有して，首都を江陵(荆州)においた。朱全忠の部曲であった初主の高季興(858‐928)は，後梁建国の907年(開平1)に荆南節度使に拝せられ，後唐の荘宗によって924年(同光2)に南平王に封じられた。以後5主57年の間，中原王朝のみでなく，周囲の呉，南漢，閩（びん），後蜀などの諸国にいずれも臣礼をとりつつ，緩衝地帯としての役割を活用し内地商業の一大中心地として栄えた。
