Lord of Nakatsu Domain in Buzen Province (Oita Prefecture) in the mid-Edo period. Childhood name Kumataro, initial name Masakuni. Tango no Kami, Daizen no Taifu. Junior Fifth Rank. Born in Edo as the eldest son of Okudaira Masaatsu. His mother was the daughter of Makino Bingonokami Sadamichi. He inherited the domain in 1758 (8th year of the Horeki era). He studied Japanese classics under Kamo no Mabuchi, was blessed with literary talent, and excelled in waka poetry. Known works include "Rokujuukagoen Waka" (1774), "Kujuman" (1777), and "Toso Ko" (unknown). He also showed understanding of Western studies, such as by protecting Maeno Ryosai, and employed the Confucian scholar Fujita Keisho to govern well. He is highly regarded as a wise ruler, along with Ikeda Mitsumasa of Bizen and Shimazu Shigehide of Satsuma, but sadly died at the young age of 36.

江戸中期の豊前国中津藩(大分県)藩主。幼名熊太郎,初名昌邦。丹後守,大膳大夫。従五位下。奥平昌敦の長男として,江戸に生まれる。母は牧野備後守貞通の娘。宝暦8(1758)年遺領を継ぐ。賀茂真淵に国学を学び,文学的才能にめぐまれ,和歌に秀でた。著作に,『六十賀後宴和歌』(1774),『久受蔓』(1777),『屠蘇考』(不詳)が知られる。前野良沢を保護するなど蘭学にも理解を示し,儒者藤田敬所を採用して善政をしいた。備前の池田光政,薩摩の島津重豪らと共に,名君として誉れが高いが,惜しくも36歳の若さで没。
