Azuchi [town] - Azuchi

Japanese: 安土[町] - あづち

An old town in Gamo County, central Shiga Prefecture. Located in the eastern plains of Lake Biwa, it produces rice and vegetables, mainly on the reclaimed land of Lake Nakanoko. Freshwater pearls are also cultivated. Azuchiyama is the site of Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle (a special historic site), and Oiso is a former post town on the Nakasendo road. The town developed around Jorakuji along the Tokaido main line. It is home to the Onakanokominami ruins, the remains of a dwelling from the mid-Yayoi period, and the Hyotanyama burial mound, estimated to date from the 4th century. Azuchiyama and the lake shore belong to Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park. It was merged with Omihachiman City in March 2010. 24.30 ^km2 . Population: 12,080 (2005).

滋賀県中部，蒲生(がもう)郡の旧町。琵琶湖湖東平野にあり，中之湖干拓地を中心に米，野菜を産する。淡水真珠の養殖も行う。安土山は織田信長の安土城跡（特別史跡）で，老蘇(おいそ)は中山道の旧宿場町。東海道本線に沿う常楽寺に市街が発達する。弥生中期の住居跡の大中之湖南遺跡，４世紀のものと推定される瓢箪山(ひょうたんやま)古墳などがある。安土山，湖岸は琵琶湖国定公園に属する。2010年３月近江八幡市と合併。24.30km²。１万2080人（2005）。
