The main river is 2,740 km long and has a total drainage area of 1.33 million km2, making it the third largest river in Africa after the Congo, the Nile, and the Niger. It originates in the northwestern tip of Zambia, near the border with Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), and flows south through western Zambia, collecting many tributaries. It gradually turns east, and at the border with Zimbabwe, it collects water from the largest tributary, the Kafue River, from the northwest.
