A Frankish king of the Merovingian dynasty. Reigned 561-593. Ruled the Burgundian state. Based on a centralized Roman political philosophy and a sense of belonging to the Merovingian dynasty, he suppressed conflicts between the kingships of Austrasia and Neustria as guardian of their respective kingdoms, and sought to unify the Frankish state. As protector of the Orthodox Church, he made huge donations to churches and monasteries and held six church councils. His Visigothic policy also suggests a religious intention to counter the Arian sect. [Tokuda Naohiro]

メロビング朝のフランク王。在位561‐593年。ブルグント分国を支配する。中央集権的なローマ政治理念とメロビング王家への帰属意識のもとに，アウストラシアとネウストリア両分国王権の後見人の立場から両者の争いを抑え，フランク国家の統一をはかる。正統教会の保護者として，教会および修道院に莫大な寄進を行い，6回の教会会議を催した。その西ゴート政策にもアリウス派に対抗するという宗教的意図がうかがえる。【徳田直宏】
