The name of the region in southern Germany, stretching from Lake Constance in the west to the Lech River in the east. It is part of Bavaria and part of Baden-Württemberg. The Allgäuer Alpen, on the southern border with Austria, is the foreland of the Alps, and to the north, moraine hills stretch down to the Danube River, with many rivers running through them and forming river terraces. In the Middle Ages, grains and hemp were cultivated, and the region was a thriving home-based weaving industry, but in the 19th century, under the guidance of the Swiss, it shifted to dairy farming. Cheese production, known as Emmentalerkäse (Emmental cheese), is widespread. The region is rich in pastures and fodder fields, and there are many year-round tourist resorts and bed and breakfast businesses. Oberstdorf is a world-famous ski resort. The main city, Kempten, is home to the South German Cheese and Butter Exchange.
