From 235 to 285, Rome was in a period of civil war and crisis in which the imperial throne was controlled by the military forces of various regions. After the murder of Alexander Severus (reigned 222-235), the last Severan emperor, Maximinus, a Thracian peasant, ascended to the throne, and for 50 years 26 emperors competed with each other, each supported by a subordinate local legion. Most of them were assassinated, and the country continued to be subject to invasions from outside and internal conflicts between different ethnic groups. During this time, emperors Gallienus and Aurelian tried to rebuild the country by strengthening the military system and deifying the emperor, and the accession of Diocletian brought an end to the chaos of the era of military emperors.
