Aizu Yaichi

Poet, calligrapher, and art historian. Born on August 1, 1881 in Niigata-cho (now Niigata City). He went by the pen names Shuso Dojin, Hassaku, and Konsai. He graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Waseda University in 1906 (Meiji 39) and studied primarily under Tsubouchi Shoyo. In 1908, he toured the old temples of Nara and began composing tanka poetry. In 1910, he left the Yuko school in Niigata Prefecture and transferred to Waseda Middle School, and in 1913 (Taisho 2), he became a lecturer in the English department at Waseda University. While researching Nara art, he also interviewed people in Nanto and wrote a lot of tanka poetry. In 1924, he published "Nanking New Song" and in 1931 (Showa 6), he became a professor at the Faculty of Letters of Waseda University, where he frequently published papers on Buddhist art history. In 1933, he received his doctorate for "Research into the Establishment Dates of Horyu-ji Temple, Hokki-ji Temple, and Horin-ji Temple." In 1940, he published "Rokumeishu" and in 1942, "Konsai Zuihitsu." From this time on, he frequently held solo exhibitions of his calligraphy, and his name finally became famous. In January 1945, he resigned from his position as a professor at Waseda University, and on April 14, Tokyo was damaged in the bombing by US military aircraft. In May, he moved to Nakajo Town, Niigata Prefecture (now Tainai City), and then to Niigata City. He published "Kantoshu" in 1947, "Jichu Rokumeishu" in 1952, and "Kasugano no Uta" in 1955, and became known to the world for his unique style of poetry and calligraphy. He passed away on November 21, 1956.

歌人、書家、美術史家。明治14年8月1日新潟町(現新潟市)に生まれる。秋艸道人(しゅうそうどうじん)、八朔(はっさく)、渾斎(こんさい)などと号す。1906年(明治39)早稲田(わせだ)大学文学部を卒業、もっぱら坪内逍遙(しょうよう)に師事する。1908年、奈良の古寺を巡遊し、短歌を始める。1910年、新潟県下の有恒(ゆうこう)学舎を辞し早稲田中学に転任、1913年(大正2)早稲田大学英文科講師となる。奈良美術研究のかたわら南都に取材して盛んに短歌をつくる。1924年『南京新唱(なんきょうしんしょう)』を上梓(じょうし)、1931年(昭和6)早稲田大学文学部教授となり、仏教美術史に関する論文をしきりに発表する。1933年「法隆寺・法起寺・法輪寺建立年代の研究」をもって学位を受ける。1940年『鹿鳴集(ろくめいしゅう)』を出版、1942年『渾斎随筆』を刊行、このころから書の個展をしばしば催し、書名ようやく高くなる。1945年1月、早大教授を辞任、4月14日、米軍機の東京爆撃で罹災(りさい)、5月、新潟県中条町(現胎内(たいない)市)に寓居(ぐうきょ)、ついで新潟市に転居。1947年(昭和22)『寒燈(かんとう)集』、1952年『自註(じちゅう)鹿鳴集』、1955年『春日野(かすがの)の歌』などを上梓し、独自の歌風、書格をもって世に知られるようになる。昭和31年11月21日死去。
