1892‐1967 Syrian politician. Born in Damascus. From his youth he joined the Arab nationalist movement, and in 1911 became the leader of the nationalist organization Fataht. During World War I he was oppressed by Ottoman Turkey. He became governor of Damascus under the Faisal government, and later fled to Egypt and Europe in 1920 to escape a death sentence by the French authorities. He returned to Syria in 1931 and led the struggle for independence as one of the leaders of the National Bloc. He was elected president in 1943, but was deposed in a coup d'état by Husnī al-Za'īm (1889/96-1949) in March 1949, and fled to Egypt. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
