Mole cricket (English name: Gryllotalpa orientalis)

Orthoptera, family Moth family. Body length about 30mm. Brown and cylindrical, with a small head. The antennae are short and whip-like, and the compound eyes are small. The forelimbs are uniquely shaped like those of a mole, suitable for digging in the soil, and there is a tympanum on the inside of the tibia. The forewings are short, and both males and females have sound organs. The hind wings are long but thin and folded up. There are two tail hairs at the tip of the abdomen. They live by digging tunnels in the soil, and both larvae and adults can be seen all year round. Adults make a "zee" sound, commonly known as the sound of earthworms. They are distributed widely throughout Japan and eastern Asia. (→Orthoptera)

直翅目ケラ科。体長 30mm内外。全体が褐色の円筒形状で，頭部は小さい。触角はむち状で短く，複眼は小さい。前肢はモグラのそれに似た特異な形になっていて土を掘るのに適しており，脛節内側には鼓膜がある。前翅は短く，雌雄とも発音器がある。後翅は長いが細くたたまれる。腹端に2本の尾毛がある。土中にトンネルを掘ってすみ，幼虫，成虫ともに一年中みられる。成虫は「じーっ」と鳴き，俗にミミズが鳴くといわれる。日本全土，アジア東部に広く分布する。 (→直翅類 )
