Year of death: June 25, 1910 (Meiji 43) Born: January 31, 1834 Founder of Ferris Japanese-English Girls' School (Ferris Girls' Academy). Raised in Wardsboro, Vermont, USA, in the United States, in a devout Christian family. Studied at Monson Academy in Massachusetts and elsewhere, and worked as a teacher in Auburn, New York, New Jersey, and Brooklyn. She aspired to be an overseas missionary from an early age, and came to Japan in 1869 under the guidance of SR Brown, a pioneer in Japanese missionary work. In September 1870 (Meiji 3), she took over the private school run by Mrs. Clara L. Hepburn in the Yokohama Concession and began teaching English. In 1870, she separated the women's department and established the foundations of a girls' school. In 1875, she built a school building and a dormitory at 178 Yamate and opened Ferris Seminary, improving education. From 1881 onwards, she engaged in missionary work in Tokyo, Morioka and elsewhere with her husband ER Miller. From 1882 onwards, she was responsible for publishing the small Sunday school magazines "Joyful Sounds" and "Little Sounds" with Toru Miura.
