During a tour of France, a comedian named Zan Ganassa, also known as Alberto Nazelli (c. 1540-84), gave the name Arlequin to Zanni, the prototype of the clown in the Commedia dell'arte. Ganassa brought the role back to Italy and created the archetypal clown, Arlecchino. …
