Year of death: 7th April 1650 (7th May 1650) Year of birth: October 6, 1607 (November 25, 1607) A painter of the early Edo period. The second son of Kano Takanobu. Born in Yamashiro Province (Kyoto Prefecture). Nicknamed Shuma, he shaved his head and took the name Jitensai. In 1630, he was summoned to Edo and bestowed a mansion in Takekawacho, where he established the foundations of the Kobikicho Kano family, painters for the shogunate. Together with his brother Tan'yū and others, he produced sliding door paintings for Nijō Castle (1626), the Imperial Palace (1641, 1642), and the guest hall of Shojuraigō-ji Temple (1642). His paintings were influenced by Tan'yū, but he created his own unique style of painting, with lyrical ink paintings that made use of the white space and ink bleeding. There is also a theory that he disappeared at the end. Other representative works include the "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang" folding screen (Tokyo National Museum) and the "Kogo and Shiyu Visit the Emperor" folding screen (Idemitsu Museum of Arts). <References> Tajima Shiichi (ed.), "A View of Oriental Art," Vol. 5 (Keiko Nakamachi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
