An English dictionary with a long history and authority. It is abbreviated as OED. The first edition consisted of 12 volumes and one supplementary volume. It was published in 1933 as a revision of A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (NED, 10 volumes in total), which was published between February 1, 1884 and April 19, 1928, with the editorial policy of including all English from the mid-12th century onwards (some even earlier). It was published by Oxford University Press. The publication was proposed at a linguistics society meeting in London in 1857, and in 1879, James Murray, who was the president of the linguistics society at the time, became the chief editor and began editing work. Murray was succeeded by Henry Bradley, William Alexander Craigie, and Charles T. Onions. In 1971, the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was published, which reduced the 1933 edition to 12 volumes and the supplement to 2 volumes. In 1955, R.W. Burchfield began collecting words that had been used in the English-speaking world since the publication of the OED, and published A Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary (4 volumes, 1972-86). In 1989, the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED2, 20 volumes) was published, co-edited by John A. Simpson and Edmund S.C. Wiener. A CD-ROM version was released in 1992. Two additional volumes were published in 1993 and 1997, and a full revision for the third edition began. 権威と歴史を誇る英語辞典。OEDと略称される。初版は 12巻と補遣1巻からなる。12世紀半ば以後の英語（一部はさらに古い）をすべて採録することを編集方針として 1884年2月1日から 1928年4月19日にかけて刊行された『史的原理による新英語辞典』A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles（NED。全10巻）を改訂したもので，1933年に刊行された。発行元はオックスフォード大学出版局。1857年にロンドンでの言語学会で出版の提案がなされ，1879年，当時言語学会の会長だったジェームズ・マレーが主幹に就任，編集作業を開始した。マレーの後任には，ヘンリー・ブラッドリー，ウィリアム・アレクサンダー・クレーギー，チャールズ・T.オニオンズらがついた。1971年には，1933年版全12巻と補遣を 2巻に縮小した『オックスフォード英語辞典コンパクト版』The Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionaryが刊行された。また OED刊行後に英語圏で用いられるようになった語の収集が 1955年 R.W.バーチフィールドを主幹として開始され，『オックスフォード英語辞典補遣』A Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary（全4巻，1972～86）として刊行された。1989年『オックスフォード英語辞典』第2版（OED2。全20巻）が，ジョン・A.シンプソンとエドマンド・S.C.ウィーナーを共同編者として刊行された。1992年には CD-ROM版が発行された。1993年と 1997年に増補 2巻が刊行され，第3版刊行に向けての全面改訂作業が始まった。この作業の経過および第2版とその補遣はウェブサイトで公開されている。
