Ernst Grosse

1862‐1927
A German ethnologist and art historian. He was initially stationed in Japan as an embassy official, and later became a professor at the University of Freiburg. His representative works include "The Origin of Art" (1894) and "Various Forms of Family and Economic Forms" (1896). Grosse was the first to systematically discuss the existence of correlations between various economic forms, art styles, and forms of kinship organization. His theory on the correlation between economic forms and kinship forms was used by W. Schmidt to complete his system of cultural spheres.

ドイツの民族学者，美術史家。はじめ大使館員として日本に駐在，のちフライブルク大学教授となった。《芸術の始源》(1894)と《家族の諸形態と経済の諸形態》(1896)が代表作である。グローセは，さまざまな経済形態と美術の諸様式，親族組織の諸形態との間に相関関係が存在することを，はじめて体系的に論じた。その経済形態と親族形態の相関関係に関する学説は，W.シュミットが，その文化圏体系を完成するのに利用した。
