...The legend of Tristan was already linked to the Arthurian legend in the works of the Anglo-Norman Thomas and the Norman Beroulle. The final compilation of the Arthurian legends in the Middle Ages was accomplished in the prose work Morte d'Arthur by the 15th-century English knight Thomas Malory. There are various possible reasons for the development of the Arthurian legend in the Middle Ages, but it is easy to imagine that the romantic, ethical, and fantastical elements contained in this legend appealed to the cultural and spiritual tastes that gave rise to customs such as chivalry and courtly love.
