Kazakh Steppe

…It is found in areas slightly wetter than the desert, and gradually changes into forests or savannas further out. The Kazakh steppe (formerly known as the Kyrgyz steppe) that stretches north of the Caspian and Aral seas, the Hungarian pusta in the west, the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range in the east, and the grasslands of the Mongolian plateau are typical examples. Grazing or nomadic pastures are practiced here, but there are also many cultivated areas, such as the black soil belt on the north coast of the Black Sea, and it has been one of the routes of cultural transmission since ancient times. The veldt of southern Africa, the prairies of North America, and the pampas of Argentina are also similar grasslands. …
