Born: March 23, 1910, Tokyo [Died] September 6, 1998. Tokyo film director. Graduated from Kyoka Gakuen Junior High School. Joined PCL (the predecessor of Toho) in 1936. After working as an assistant director to Yamamoto Kajiro, he made his debut in 1943 with Sugata Sanshiro. In films such as No Regrets for My Youth (1946), which was modeled on the Takigawa and Sorge incidents, Wonderful Sunday (1947), Drunken Angel (1948), and Stray Dog (1949), he explored the customs of the post-World War II era with a rich humanity. His Rashomon (1950) won the San Marco Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, making a major contribution to the expansion of Japanese films overseas. He subsequently released modern dramas such as The Idiot (1951), Ikiru (1952), Record of Creatures (1955), High and Low (1963), and Dodesukaden (1970), as well as period dramas such as Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957), The Bottom (1957), Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro Tsubaki (1962), and Red Beard (1965). In 1975, he was invited to the Soviet Union to direct Dersu Uzala, and won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for Kagemusha (1980). In 1984, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by France, and the following year, in 1985, he became the first filmmaker to receive the Order of Culture. In the same year, he released Ran, an adaptation of King Lear. In 1990, he received an Honorary Academy Award. His creative drive did not wane until the end of his life, and he continued to release new works, including Dreams in 1990 and Rhapsody in August in 1991. His final work was Not Yet (1993), based on a novel by Hyakken Uchida. He was posthumously awarded the People's Honor Award.
