Abbreviation for International Labor Organization. Established as an agency of the League of Nations based on the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, it became a specialized agency of the United Nations after World War II. Aiming to improve working conditions, secure employment, and raise living standards, it has established standards on child labor, disabled workers, discrimination, freedom of association, basic human rights, maternity protection, pensions, equal treatment, and more. Its basic spirit and objectives are clear in the ILO Charter and the Declaration of Philadelphia. Each member state sends two representatives of the government, one of the capitalists, and one of the workers to the general assembly, and many conventions and recommendations are passed. The permanent secretariat is in Geneva. There are 177 member states (1998). Japan joined in 1919, withdrew in 1938, rejoined in 1951, and became a permanent member in 1954. Nobel Peace Prize in 1969.

International Labor Organizationの略。国際労働機関。1919年ベルサイユ条約に基づき，国際連盟の一機関として設置，第２次大戦後は国際連合の専門機関となる。労働条件の改善，雇用確保，生活水準の向上をめざし，児童労働，障害労働者，差別，結社の自由，基本的人権，母性保護，年金，平等な待遇などについて基準を設けてきた。基本的な精神と目的はILO憲章，フィラデルフィア宣言に明らか。各加盟国は政府２，資本家１，労働者１の代表を総会に出し，多くの条約・勧告を決議している。常設事務局はジュネーブ。加盟国177（1998）。日本は1919年加盟，1938年脱退，1951年再加盟，1954年に常任理事国。1969年ノーベル平和賞。
